Mannatech is a scam - here is a summary of the "evidence" their science website provides

Mannatech is a pyramid scheme.  Ahem. Sorry - multi-level marketing scheme.

For more information and excellent research on Mannatech and their tactics - here you go:
http://mannatechscams.com/

A while back, an old friend from high school phoned me and asked whether I would like to make some money.

Tip: If any conversation starts like this, you are either going to end up broke and/or in jail.

He was selling Mannatech.  But I was not sure he knew what he was selling. So I offered to read up, in detail, about the product (which I knew to be a scam) - and get back to him.
We never did get to discuss the issue, but I did spend quite a few hours reading Mannatech's literature and writing a report on their "proof".

http://mannatechscience.org/home/publications

So now I have this piece, and no-one to share it with.  Except for the internet.

Maybe he reads my blog.

Maybe no-one in their right mind reads this.

So, well done for making it this far, you.
*playful shoulder punch*
Titled as "Love Punch 3". Wow. Such flirtation.
So here is a short (and perhaps not so sweet) shot at a company that can afford to pay 7 million dollars in fines and still be, well...fine.

First: Levels of evidence:

This diagram represents with how much confidence we can make claims about certain topics.  Not everything in medicine will ever be meta-analysis supported and this is partly due to ethics and practicality.  Anything that wants to make it into medicine has to, first of all, be based on a high level of evidence.

The evidence pyramid  is one of the great scientific wonders of the world.

The role of expert opinion, anecdotes and testimonials:

Firstly – when measured against the above – Mannatech's marketing, based on many testimonials is inappropriate, no matter how tempting it is.

Secondly, anecdotes are easily selected through cherry-picking and are subject to a confirmation bias.

Dr Darryl See, is/was Mannatech's science man.
He has had to surrender his medical license after a deluge of many, many accusations.

So...yeah.

Lastly, even if the internet is flooded with people making claims about Mannatech (or penis enlargement or weight-loss products) we must look beyond testimonials and look for evidence.

Sample sizes, p-values and confidence intervals

So say a study is a randomized controlled trial which has been double blinded.  Great.  But what is the P-value (measure of how likely this outcome was the result of chance), confidence interval (of the P-value), and overall quality of the research?

Many studies, through their design, introduce biases which make positive results inevitable.  This is why it is very important that investigators share this information in great detail.

Large sample sizes which are representative of the population you want to apply the evidence to must be present in order to ensure that the findings are meaningful.

Patents are not evidence

A patent on any substance does not prove efficacy.  There are hundreds of thousands of patents on things which don’t work.

Trademarks and Registration are not evidence

The fact that Smarties is a trademarked, does not allow Nestle to make the claim that eating Smarties™ will make you smarter.

Citing inappropriate research

Research must directly support the claim that is being made, preferably in as similar a setting as possible.  If a claim is made about something for a certain condition – I must have the best available evidence at hand, done in as similar a population as possible for the same indication.

For example – if I want to prescribe a drug to reduce post-operative nausea and vomiting in children after anaesthesia for tonsillectomies, I need evidence gathered in as similar a setting as possible.

So if I want to claim that a drug works for people with MS, SLE, ischaemic heart disease, etc, I need to have evidence (high up on the diagram above), with a large sample size (determined statistically), and done in a population similar to the one I want to apply my results to.

With that in mind, let’s discuss the articles cited as proof for Mannatech.  The same articles were listed multiple times.  All of them were inappropriate.

Virtually all of them are either completely unrelated for the claims being made, suffer from major methodological flaws, such as small sample sizes or lack of controls, or do not support the notion that supplementation offers a significant benefit:

BounceBack™ capsules for reduction of DOMS after eccentric exercise: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover pilot study
·    The fact that it is randomized, double-blind and placebo controlled sounds impressive, but it is unimportant.
·    Study only contained 10 participants.  The confidence intervals (which were not given) would most likely make the P-values meaningless

Brain-Specific Effects of Ambrotose® Products: A Preliminary Animal Study to Investigate Cognitive Benefits Found in Humans
·    Looks like a Meta-analysis, but is a collection of studies on healthy people, (each with its own major limitations (small sample sizes, lack of third-party involvement) and, most importantly, the use of healthy subjects precludes any possibility of generalizing to a diseased population.
·    The study itself is done on mice.  No health claims can be made from this.

Human Colonic Bacteria Can Utilize Stabilized Aloe Vera Gel Polysaccharides and a Mixed Saccharide-Based Glyconutritional Dietary Supplement, Advanced Ambrotose
·    This study doesn’t show anything.
·    It shows that a bacteria can metabolize a polysaccharide.  Anyone could show the same with a petri dish, their own stool, and some agar gel.

Effect of a combination dietary supplement product (BounceBackTM) on the signs and symptoms of delayed onset
muscle soreness after eccentric exercise: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover pilot study
·    This study is the same one as the first one.
·    Only ten people participated.
·    The results (which would only be applicable to post exercise muscle soreness) are meaningless.

Effects of a Glyconutritional Supplement on Brain Potentials Associated with Language Processing
·    This study’s results are reported as “not statistically significant”.
·    If you were to make generalizations from its findings, (which you shouldn’t), it would only be useful in refuting claims that Ambrotose works at all.
·    The most concerning is that this poster is happily cited as proof in the second article.

Immunomodulatory dietary polysaccharides: a systematic review of the literature
·     Nothing to do with Mannatech
·    Literally every English study ever  conducted on polysaccharides and the immune system.
·    Applicability:
o    “Taken as a whole, the oral polysaccharide literature is highly heterogenous and is not sufficient to support broad produce structure/function generalizations.”

Chemical characterization of polysaccharide-rich ingredients from Aloe vera, Larix laricina, Larix occidentalis, and Undaria pinnatifid
·    Nothing to do with Mannatech
·          Just a description of polysaccharides in terms of molecular weights and sugar contents.

Immunomodulatory activity of polysaccharides isolated from Clerodendrum splendens: Beneficial effects in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis
·    This study was conducted on a special type of mutant mice.
·     No generalizations can be made unless you are treating these mutant mice.

Intestinal microbiota’s naturally occurring enzymes and their  effects on plant polysaccharide digestion
·     This poster only showed that certain bacteria can digest polysaccharides.

A sensitive in vitro method for evaluation of immunostimulatory properties of natural products
·     This poster does not provide any proof for Mannatech at all and merely describes chemical analysis method and the effects of these chemicals when added to petri dishes of cells.

The Effect of Dietary Supplements on the Quality of Life of Retired Professional Football Players
·          Sample size was fifteen
·          Many, many different substances were used.
·          Self-reporting was the measurement.
·          No evidence for Mannatech’s efficacy.

An open-label dosing study to evaluate the safety and effects of a dietary plant-derived polysaccharide supplement on the N-glycosylation status of serum glycoproteins in healthy subjects
·          Sample size was 18
·          No confidence intervals given.
·          Limited information on samples.
·          Not clear how this relates to Mannatech products.

Effect of Ambrotose AO® on resting and exercise-induced antioxidant capacity and oxidative stress in healthy adults
·     Sample size is 25.
·     “No statistically detected difference is observed in resting or exercise-induced oxidative stress biomarkers, in quality of life, or in GXT time to exhaustion.”
·     Study shows no statistically significant change.

Best, T. Bryan J, Burns N. An investigation of saccharide effects on memory performance. Abstracts of the 12th Annual Australian Psychiatry Conference, 2005.
·     “There were no statistically significant effects of the treatments on  the performance on any of the outcome measures”

The influence of a pre-exercise sports drink (PRX) on factors related to maximal aerobic performance
·     Sample size is 29
·     No confidence intervals given
·     Not generalizable

The Effectiveness of a Pre-Exercise Performance  Drink (PRX) on Indices of Maximal  Cardiorespiratory Fitness
·    Sample of 24
Water might not be an appropriate placebo in this case.
·          The finding of increased cardiorespiratory fitness measurements after ingesting an energy drink is bizarre.

The effects of whey protein on cardiometabolic risk factors
·    This is an actual study on whey protein.  Which appears to be scientific.
·    It has nothing to do with Mannatech and was conducted by an independent research group.

Conclusion
Mannatech’s own website offers no evidence for their own products or any claims regarding their products’ efficacy.

They just think that you are too stupid to read that which they have given you.

  1. Thank you for this great article, I enjoyed reading it and im glad I didn't hop aboard the Mannatech train like some of my friends.

  2. Hissycat this is a lot of jibberish. You can buy it wholesale or do the multilevel. You aren't forced into selling. First of all this stuff works. My Aunt went from 150 cc to 50 cc insulin a day. My dad's bursitis got better. My son who had been on all those mess like Ritalin that didn't help didn't need them anymore. The products work. They are made from Aloe vera. No chemicals. So Mr smarty pants blogger with all the tech savvy. Did you even try it?

Also...uhm... everything contains a chemical in some or other form. Unless you're selling a vacuum. In which case, that's another kettle of fish. But one without fish. Just a vacuum.

    2. You are beyond stupid saying that everything is a chemical, you do not know what chemical means. They should not allow people like you on the internet.

    3. Your right, twice my catoroid arteries were blocked and I was scheduled for surgery the first time, then. Doctor told me to take the Cardio Balance, and in 6 weeks they were clear, another issue I had was going through the change: head aches, hot flashes, bone deteriation, the doc advised me to take plus, a couple years later the doc said my bones were like a sixteen year olds, and I was in my 50's. The best one was my brain injury from a car accident, I couldn't remember my words to talk, it would take several minutes to get a sentence out! Zbd I gad memiry loss my the doc suggested the ambratose powder, she said after u was on it fir z several weeks that my speech was clearing up and I was speaking clearer and faster each time she saw me. So yes it works, at least for me it did. My daughter was a teacher, and one if the girls had brain cancer, her doctor put her on the phyto nutrients, and Ambratose powder, she was 12 years old and her cancer cleared up. Two of my grandchildren had tonsillitis all the time sling with strep throat, I started them on the mana bears, and they gad no more problems. There cousin was two years old, she didn't attempt to talk or crawl or anything just lay there with no interaction, we disolved Mana bears in water for her to drink, within a few months she started moving around and the beginning of crawling. It was so Wonderful to watch the changes in people who took these products.

  3. Are you 100% sure of your facts. You sound a bit deluded yourself. You also sound as though you're a Monsanto supporter. Mannatech definitely works. NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT!!!

The only people who "seem" to hate Mannatech happen to be students (who think they are activists) who cannot afford to buy it.

I need you to provide me actual evidence that it does not work. I don't need assumptions. I don't want your personal opinion. I just want actual scientific facts.

I am giving you seven (7) days in which to provide the facts, failing which I will provide the public actual facts of your phony research.

You want to poke fun at what works for some and not for others? Then let's poke holes in your findings.

    Looking forward to our debate.

  7. I love that, when people have trouble with reading comprehension or simply don't agree with something they just say "this is a lot of jibberish". And when it is pointed out that anecdotal "evidence" does not represent valid scientific data, what do folks post in their response? Yupp, anecdotal bull plop. If you want to use Mannatech, go right ahead. Just know that the science does not support their wild claims, period.

    1. It's nothing special. What is special is what claims the higher-up people make. I am a personal witness to a woman, while on Mannatech, after brain surgery, was hauled up on stage at a national meeting in Dallas to give testimony. She didn't make any claims but her mother, a founding member, made the claim that Mannatech healed her. It didn't. She died. But while her daughter was still alive, the mother told everyone she was healed and made a fortune. Then the mother took the daughter off of her prescribed medications but kept her on only Mannatech (she claimed) and that's when her daughter died. Some people get so caught up in their own crap that it can kill someone.

  8. I am sorry to sound harsh, but experimental methodology is very important when reaching a conclusion about a medical treatment. If we were to take someone's word based on incorrect methodology, or based on their own personal experience, then we would still be treating dog bites with hair from the offending dog.

  9. I think it is important to note that Mannatech is not medical treatment and not intended to treat any diseases. I have been using the products for 4 years now and I am perfectly healthy. The products are food and intended to supplement the nutrients we don't get in our modern day diets anymore.

The company has an extensive product range and I specifically love their skincare and sports range. Empact is the first pre-workout my husband can use as it is a low GI energy release and does not give that sugar spike.

Some of the top sportmen in South Africa are using their products. I don't see any other sports products with studies? Why the need to bash a company who is actually trying to make a difference?

The products work! Try it yourself and if you are not satisfied the company will be happy to give you your money back. There is a 3-month money-back-guarantee.

  13. From personal experience I have witnessed Mannatech products drastically helping peoples lives in unbelievable proportion, it really is that difficult to figure out if mannatech is legit or not. They have been listed on the Nasdaq Stock echange since 1999 already, any company listed has to have immaculate record and are constantly getting audited.
Rumours spread because pharmaceutical companys are highly scared of mannatech because it actually does what its supposed to do unlinke all the synthetic supplementation you buy like vitamins and minerals. witch are all 95% synthetic made from petroleum and coal tar direvitives....... kailife.info has a nice layout on all these matters and you will get any questions answered . Thats just my truth and i have to share love and light to others

  14. Yip. They are on the stock market NASDAQ, meaning it cant be a pyramid scheme as it is illegal in the USA anyway. Second of all go read up on NSF which is a non-profit organisation which tests products to see if what they claim are to be true. You are definitely uninformed about what the product is and does. Did you use products? No i dont think so otherwise you wont be putting up this bullshit. You cant say that a car is shotty when you havent even test drived it. Use the product and then give your blog ago! Nothing you say in this articel os based on facts it is what you think of it. You dod not even mention NASDAQ or the NSF? Why? Maybe because you are not informed at all. Clever means to believe what you read, intelegent means you know and studie your facts before you give facts which you have no idea of.

    1. Catherine, you are right to question anything written on this page or any other. My advice to you or anybody else reading this blog is to do your own due diligence and check the science for yourself. If you find Mannatech to be a fraud as this blogger suggests I would be very surprised however if you find Mannatech to be an ethical, legal, scientific based company whose products assist the body is working as it was intended, as I did, and get the results and health benefits that I did, then you might decide to try the products yourself.

Wow so much to Debate look its up to the individuals if they want try it in the first place no one forces them to do anything there is always going to be a for and against in anything we look or take these days and so many companies out there with all these fantastic claims I for one looked right into this company and was happy with the reports and the science behind the product and yes I read a lot of bad reports but it was me that made the decision to give it a try and and happy that I did Some will Some wont So what moving right along have a great life everyone and be thankful for another day

  17. Hey, the only problem about mannatech is that they have had a history of taking advantage of people diagnosed with cancer, and claiming that it can cure cancer, making the person not using normal medical procedures.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am so glad to stumble on this blog. The fact remains that nobody is allowed to claim that Mannatech cures diseases. What Mannatech products do is to help support health. The stats showed that people are deficient in most vitamins and minerals which is very essential like Magnesium, Vit D3. You cannot get all these essential nutrients from your food, first of all most of them are processed and the nutrition value is not up to what it was in the early 1900’s. Our soil nutrient values are depleted and you also have pollution. No wonder we see so many people with health issues. So, the question remains, what is the solution, obviously, supplementation. I preferred have the natural way and not synthetics, which 95% is. I am so grateful to be introduced to Mannatech, a lifesaving technology.

  19. My mum died of cancer in November 2009. While Ambrotose never cured her - it was NEVER claimed that it would - the quality of her life increased exponentially and she was able to die with dignity and without too much discomfort. I say thank you, Mannatech, and to all those involved. It is such a pity that the majority of those against this company are blinded by Ponzi schemes and their own prejudices.

  20. Mannatech does not claim to be medicine. Mannatech does not claim to cure any ailments, the people who use it do so. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  21. I don't doubt that there may be some benefits to the products. We ordered one product, one time. But the company charged our card a second time without our authorization and sent us another shipment (we had NOT chosen auto-shipments). So we contacted them about it, they put us through a real hassle to return it and refund the money but we jumped through all their hoops. Many months later, when cleaning up some backburner bookkeeping notes, I realized I had an outstanding note on this. We contacted them. First they said that we hadn't sent the product back. We said, we know we did. Then they admitted they received it but claimed we hadn't filled out a special form for it. We said we're pretty sure we did it but, hey, send it to us again, we'll fill it out again. Then they came back and said that we had received the special form from us after all but that there may be a restocking fee. We told them they need to issue a full refund, since this was their error and would be considered fraud. They said they'll call us if there's a restocking fee. We said "no, see to it that there won't be". Next thing I know, they only reimbursed us part of the purchase. Needless to say, it's suspicious when a company operates like this regardless of their products because it is a form of cyber crime.

  22. Its always good to question, I think many of the comments are confusing themselves.
The way I look at it is:
    1. Does Ambratose exist and is it part of cell formation?
I believe the answer is yes
    2. Does Mannatech contain Ambratose?
    I hope so

So I shall try this stuff.
There are a lot of medicines out there that only require 10 people in a test (im from Australia, ive seen this on pain killer ads)
I dont think Mannatech have claimed that their product WILL cure cancer, I think the people its helped have claimed it has helped with Cancer.
It is important to seperate what someone has actually claimed versus what someone else told you that third party said
I do not work or sell Mannatech, I just heard of the product yesterday and watched some videos on youtube. For me it seems like it MAY help, so instead of buying a coffee or energy drink each day I will try it
